Amazing Water

The health benefits of drinking tea.

hot tea

With fall approaching, we are all slowly getting into the mood for a nice, warm drink. Coffee is great, but many people have issues drinking too much coffee, or drinking it later in the day.

Next time, try some hot tea. It is a nice, calming treat that also has many health benefits. These benefits include the following:

Tea can boost exercise endurance.

Scientists have found that the antioxidants in green tea extract increase the body’s ability to burn fat as fuel, which accounts for improved muscle endurance.

Drinking tea could help reduce the risk of heart attack.

Tea might also help protect against cardiovascular and degenerative diseases.

he antioxidants in tea can help protect against a lot of cancers.

This includes breast, colon, colorectal, skin, lung, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, pancreas, liver, ovarian, prostate and oral cancers.

Tea is hydrating to the body.

Tea consists of mostly water, making it an excellent hydrator.

Drinking tea is linked with a lower risk of Parkinson’s disease.

When considered with other factors like smoking, physical activity, age and body mass index, regular tea drinking was associated with a lowered risk of Parkinson’s disease in both men and women.

Tea could provide protection from ultraviolet rays.

We know it’s important to limit exposure to UV rays, and we all know what it’s like to feel the burn. The good news is that green tea may act as a back-up sunscreen.

Tea could keep waist circumference in check.

In one study, participants who regularly consumed hot tea had lower waist circumference and lower BMI than non-consuming participants.

Scientists speculate that regular tea drinking lowers the risk of metabolic syndrome.

MS increases the risk of diabetes, artery disease and stroke.

Tea could be beneficial to people with Type 2 diabetes.

Studies suggest that compounds in green tea could help diabetics better process sugars.

Tea can help the body recover from radiation.

One study found that tea helped protect against cellular degeneration upon exposure to radiation, while another found that tea can help skin bounce back postexposure. Green tea has been found to improve bone mineral density and strength.

Tea might be an effective agent in the prevention and treatment of neurological diseases.

This is especially true with degenerative diseases. While many factors influence brain health, polyphenols in green tea may help maintain the parts of the brain that regulate learning and memory.

Now imagine the convenience of having this delicious medicine for the body and soul delivered straight to your door! That’s what we can provide for you. We offer a wide variety of products including tea and coffee. (See all products)

What does dehydration look like?

AOWe lose water every day in the form of water vapor in the breath we exhale and in our excreted sweat, urine, and stool. But what effect can this fluid-loss have on us?

When we lose too much water, our bodies may become out of balance or dehydrated. With dehydration, more water is moving out of our cells and bodies than what we take in through drinking.

Symptoms of dehydration (Can vary in occurrence and severity):

  • Increased thirst
  • Dry mouth and swollen tongue
  • Weakness
  • Dizziness
  • Palpitations (feeling that the heart is jumping or pounding)
  • Confusion
  • Sluggishness fainting
  • Fainting
  • Inability to sweat
  • Decreased urine output

How do I avoid dehydration?

  • Plan ahead and take extra water to all outdoor events and work where increased sweating, activity, and heat stress will increase fluid losses. Encourage athletes and outdoor workers to replace fluids at a rate that equals the loss.
  • Avoid exercise and exposure during high heat index days. Listen to weather forecasts for high heat stress days, and plan events that must occur outside during times when temperatures are cooler.
  • Ensure that older people and infants and children have adequate drinking water or fluids available and assist them as necessary. Make sure that any incapacitated or impaired person is encouraged to drink and provided with adequate fluids.
  • Avoid alcohol consumption, especially when it is very warm, because alcohol increases water loss and impairs your ability to sense early signs associated with dehydration.
  • Wear light-colored and loose-fitting clothing if you must be outdoors when it is hot outside. Carry a personal fan or mister to cool yourself.
  • Break up your exposure to hot temperatures. Find air-conditioned or shady areas and allow yourself to cool between exposures. Taking someone into a cooled area for even a couple of hours each day will help prevent the cumulative effects of high heat exposure.
  • Drink plenty of water!!!!!

Dehydration caused by heat exposure, excessive exercise or limited liquid intake is easily corrected and extremely avoidable.

Basically,
To prevent dehydration, drink plenty of water. To remedy dehydration, drink plenty of water. To help your changes of feeling good, drink plenty of water. To stay healthy, drink plenty of water.

Place an order today and avoid dehydration.

The health benefits of coffee.

coffee

Many of us start our day the same way; Roll out of bed, zombie-walk into the kitchen and start our day with a good ‘ole cup of joe, but did you know that your morning cup could have many health benefits?

According to AuthorityNutrition, coffee can have these 13 health benefits that are sure to keep you sipping into the afternoon.

1. Coffee Can Improve Energy Levels and Make You Smarter

Coffee can help people feel less tired and increase energy levels because it contains caffeine, which is actually the most commonly consumed psychoactive substance in the world.

Caffeine blocks an inhibitory neurotransmitter called Adenosine. When that happens, the amount of other neurotransmitters like norepinephrine and dopamine actually increases, leading to enhanced firing of neurons.

Many controlled trials in humans show that coffee improves various aspects of brain function. This includes memory, mood, vigilance, energy levels, reaction times and general cognitive function.

2. Coffee Can Help You Burn Fat

Caffeine is one of the very few natural substances that have actually been proven to aid fat burning. Several studies show that caffeine can boost the metabolic rate by 3-11%.

Other studies show that caffeine can specifically increase the burning of fat, by as much as 10% in obese individuals and 29% in lean people.

3. The Caffeine Can Drastically Improve Physical Performance

Caffeine stimulates the nervous system, causing it to send signals to the fat cells to break down body fat, but it also increases Epinephrine (Adrenaline) levels in the blood.

This is the “fight or flight” hormone, designed to make our bodies ready for intense physical exertion. Caffeine makes the fat cells break down body fat, releasing them into the blood as free fatty acids and making them available as fuel. Given these effects, it is not surprising to see that caffeine can improve physical performance by 11-12%, on average.

Considering that, it makes sense to have a strong cup of coffee about a half an hour before you head to the gym.

4. There Are Essential Nutrients in Coffee

A single cup of coffee contains:

-Riboflavin (Vitamin B2): 11% of the RDA.
-Pantothenic Acid (Vitamin B5): 6% of the RDA.
-Manganese and Potassium: 3% of the RDA.
-Magnesium and Niacin (B3): 2% of the RDA.

Although this may not seem like a big deal, most people are drinking more than one cup per day. If you drink 3-4, then these amounts quickly add up.

5. Coffee May Lower Your Risk of Type II Diabetes

Type 2 diabetes is currently afflicting about 300 million people worldwide.

It is characterized by elevated blood sugars in the context of insulin resistance or an inability to secrete insulin, but coffee drinkers have a significantly reduced risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Studies show that people who drink the most coffee have a 23-50% lower risk of getting this disease, one study showing a reduction as high as 67%.

According to a review that looked at data from 18 studies with a total of 457,922 individuals, each daily cup of coffee was associated with a 7% reduced risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

6. Coffee May Protect You From Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common neurodegenerative disease and the leading cause of dementia worldwide. This disease usually affects people over 65 years of age. There is no known cure for Alzheimer’s.

However, there are several things you can do to prevent the disease from showing up in the first place. This includes the usual suspects like eating healthy and exercising, but drinking coffee may be incredibly effective as well.

Several studies show that coffee drinkers have up to a 65% lower risk of getting Alzheimer’s disease.

7. Caffeine May Lower The Risk of Parkinson’s

Parkinson’s disease is the second most common neurodegenerative disease, right after Alzheimer’s. It is caused by death of dopamine-generating neurons in the brain.

Same as with Alzheimer’s, there is no known cure, which makes it that much more important to focus on prevention.

In studies, caffeinated coffee drinkers have a much lower risk of developing Parkinson’s disease, with a reduction in risk ranging from 32-60%.

8. Coffee Appears to Have Protective Effects on The Liver

Several common diseases primarily affect the liver, including hepatitis, fatty liver disease and others. Many of these diseases can lead to a condition called cirrhosis, in which the liver has been largely replaced by scar tissue.

Coffee may protect against cirrhosis. People who drink 4 or more cups per day have up to an 80% lower risk.

9. Coffee Can Fight Depression and Make You Happier

Roughly 4.1% of people in the U.S. currently meet the criteria for clinical depression, but a Harvard study published in 2011 showed women who drink 4 or more cups per day had a 20% lower risk of becoming depressed.

Another study with 208,424 individuals found that those who drank 4 or more cups per day were 53% less likely to commit suicide.

10. Coffee Drinkers Have a Lower Risk of Some Types of Cancer

Coffee appears to be protective against two types of cancer – liver cancer and colorectal cancer.

Liver cancer is the third leading cause of cancer death in the world, while colorectal cancer ranks fourth.

Studies show that coffee drinkers have up to a 40% lower risk of liver cancer.

One study of 489,706 individuals found that those who drank 4-5 cups of coffee per day had a 15% lower risk of colorectal cancer.

11. Coffee Does Not Cause Heart Disease and May Lower The Risk of Stroke

Coffee does very slightly raise blood pressure, but the effect is small (3-4 mm/Hg) and usually goes away if you drink coffee regularly.

That being said, studies do NOT support the myth that coffee raises the risk of heart disease.

In fact, there is some evidence that women who drink coffee have a reduced risk of heart disease. Some studies also show that coffee drinkers have a 20% lower risk of stroke.

12. Coffee May Help You Live Longer

Given that coffee drinkers are less likely to get many diseases, it makes sense that coffee could help you live longer, but there are actually several observational studies showing that coffee drinkers have a lower risk of death.

In two large studies, drinking coffee was associated with a 20% lower risk of death in men and a 26% lower risk of death in women, over a period of 18-24 years. This effect appears to be particularly strong in type II diabetics. In one study, diabetics who drank coffee had a 30% lower risk of death during a 20 year study period.

13. Coffee is The Biggest Source of Antioxidants in The Western Diet

For people who eat a standard Western diet, coffee may actually be the healthiest aspect of the diet. That’s because coffee contains antioxidants.

In fact, studies show that most people get more antioxidants from coffee than both fruits and vegetables combined.

That’s right! So enjoy an extra mug of healthy goodness with a clean conscience.

What is sugar doing to your body?

sugar

Most of us are guilty of over-indulging our sweet tooth from time to time, but the occasional splurge is nothing compared to the average daily sugar intake from things that we don’t even think about.

Here’s what we mean:

A 20oz. bottle of soda contains the equivalent of 16 teaspoons of sugar, which is more than The American Heart Association’s recommended daily maximum (5-9 tsp). That means that most people’s daily sugar intake get’s blown out of the water before noon.

But what does that actually mean? How does excess sugar affect your body?

Here’s few reasons to watch your sugar intake, courtesy of The Atkins Diet:

1. Sugar causes blood glucose to spike and plummet.

These kind of fluctuations in blood sugar can lead to mood swings, fatigue, headaches and cravings for more sugar. Cravings can begin a cycle of addiction in  which you feel better temporarily but, a few hours later, result in more cravings.

On the flip side, those who avoid sugar often report having little or no cravings for sugary things and feeling emotionally balanced and energized.

2. Sugar increases the risk of obesity, diabetes and heart disease.

Major studies have shown that the more foods that quickly affect blood sugar, including foods containing sugar, a person consumes, the higher his risk for becoming obese and for developing diabetes and heart disease. Emerging research is also suggesting connections between high-glycemic diets and many different forms of cancer.

3. Sugar interferes with immune function.

Animal studies have shown that sugar suppresses immune response. More research is needed to understand the exact effects, but we do know that bacteria and yeast feed on sugar. When these organisms get out of balance in the body, infections and illness are more likely.

4. A high-sugar diet often results in chromium deficiency.

It’s sort of a catch-22. If you consume a lot of sugar and other refined carbohydrates, you probably don’t get enough of the trace mineral chromium, and one of chromium’s main functions is to help regulate blood sugar. Scientists estimate that 90% of Americans don’t get enough chromium. Chromium is found in a variety of animal foods, seafood and plant foods. Refining starches and other carbohydrates rob these foods of their chromium supplies.

5. Sugar accelerates aging.

It even contributes to that tell-tale sign of aging: sagging skin. Some of the sugar you consume ends up attaching itself to proteins, in a process called glycation. These new molecular structures contribute to the loss of elasticity found in aging body tissues, from your skin to your organs and arteries. The more sugar circulating in your blood, the faster this damage takes hold.

6. Sugar causes tooth decay.

With all the other life-threatening effects of sugar, we sometimes forget the most basic damage it does. When it sits on your teeth, it creates decay more efficiently than any other food substance. For a strong visual reminder, next time the Tooth Fairy visits, try the old tooth-in-a-glass-of-Coke experiment—the results will surely convince you that sugar isn’t good for your pearly whites.

7. Sugar can cause gum disease, which can lead to heart disease.

Evidence shows that chronic infections, such as those that result from periodontal problems, play a role in the development of coronary artery disease. The most popular theory is that the connection is related to widespread effects from the body’s inflammatory response to infection.

8. Sugar affects behavior and cognition in children.

Though it has been confirmed by millions of parents, most researchers have not been able to show the effect of sugar on children’s behavior. A possible problem with the research is that most of it compared the effects of a sugar-sweetened drink to one containing an artificial sweetener. It may be that kids react to both real sugar and sugar substitutes, therefore showing no differences in behavior.
What about kids’ ability to learn?
Between 1979 and 1983, 803 New York City public schools reduced the amount of table sugar and eliminated artificial colors, flavors and two preservatives from school lunches and breakfasts. The diet policy changes were followed by a 15.7 percent increase in a national academic ranking.

9. Sugar increases stress.

When we’re under stress, our stress hormone levels rise. These chemicals are the body’s fight-or-flight emergency team, sent out to prepare the body for an attack. These chemicals are also called into action when blood sugar is low.

For example:
After a blood-sugar spike, your body tries to compensate with a dip, which causes the body to release stress hormones such as adrenaline, epinephrine and cortisol. One of the main things these hormones do is raise blood sugar, providing the body with a quick energy boost. The problem is, these helpful hormones can make us feel anxious, irritable and shaky.

10. Sugar takes the place of important nutrients.

According to USDA data, people who consume the most sugar have the lowest intakes of essential nutrients, especially vitamin A, vitamin C, folate, vitamin B-12, calcium, phosphorous, magnesium and iron. Ironically, those who consume the most sugar are children and teenagers, the individuals who need these nutrients most.

So to summarize, controlling you sugar intake increases your chance of being happy, healthy, youthful, clear-thinking, stress-free and nutritionally sound.

Replace those sodas with a good ole’ fashioned bottle of water.

The effects of hunger and why we should stop it.

Kids

Watch: The Story of Purpose H2O

It seems obvious to say that having hungry children in our community is a bad thing, but we believe it’s far worse than many people realize.

Hunger is proven to have many adverse effects on children, and communities. Take a look at some of the most prevalent concerns stemming from child hunger. (Source: All About Hunger – The Food Effect)

Education

Inadequate nutrition is linked to delayed brain development and an impaired ability to learn. In addition, hunger and lack of nutrition result in reduced academic achievement; test scores are lower, absenteeism is higher and there are more grade repeats.

Crime

Teens who are not getting proper food and nutrition are more likely to steal, to fight and to be suspended from school. These are often the kids who are at risk for criminal behavior.

Behavior

Virtually all behavioral and emotional problems are more prevalent in hungry children. Hungry kids have higher rates of aggression and oppositional behavior and are actually seven to 12 times more likely to exhibit conduct disorder.

Well-Being

Hungry, undernourished children are typically fatigued and uninterested in their social environments, making them less likely to establish relationships, learn from their surroundings, deal with life’s challenges and make better choices. They also exhibit greater levels of anxiety, irritability, depression, hyperactivity and psychosocial dysfunction and are nearly twice as likely as nourished kids to need mental health counseling.

Graphic

Health Care Costs

Undernourished children are more susceptible to illness. Hunger and poor nutrition contribute to a number of serious medical conditions. And every time a family is forced to choose food over medicine, our health care problem grows.

Family Relations

Fighting is seven times more prevalent, and stealing 12 times more common, in hungry families compared to those that are well nourished. Many hungry families have to choose between food and other basic needs such as housing or utilities. And parents often feel guilt, shame and undue stress.

Partners

Quality of Life

Children are the engine for economic growth in the United States. Hunger creates unbearable, unsustainable costs that ripple through the economy and prevent economic success. If we fail to give kids the nutrition and health supports they need in the first three to five years of life, our economy is much less likely to fulfill its potential.

Work Force

An educated, skilled, dependable labor pool is essential for any community to achieve and maintain a strong economy. But hungry children who perform poorly in school are not likely to grow up and form the core of a productive workforce.

The Solution – Purpose H2O

Where Money Goes

It’s precisely these reasons why we have partnered with Snack Pak 4 Kids to bring you Purpose H2O in an attempt to end weekend hunger in our community.

26 Incredible Facts about the Human Body

26 Incredible Facts About the Human Body

We know what you’re thinking: “I have a body. Don’t you think I’d know about it?”

We thought the same thing, but then we stumbled upon these unexpected facts:

1.) The average person produces enough saliva in their lifetime to fill 2 swimming pools.

Gross, we know.

2.) Every 60 seconds, your red blood cells do a complete circuit of your body.

When blood leaves your heart, it travels about three feet per second. That’s the length of one yardstick! As the blood gets closer to the smaller arteries, it slows down.

3.) Sometimes, when you have to pee, you can visibly see that your bladder is bigger.

So don’t hold it too long!

4.) Most babies are born with blue eyes; exposure to UV light brings out their true color.

And thank goodness! Blue eyes are great, but who would want everyone’s to look the same?

5.) Most westerners consume 50 tons of food and 50,000 liters of liquid in their lifetime.

The majority of which are filled with sugars.

6.) It can take your finger and toenails 6 months to grow an entirely new nail.

Keep in mind that this doesn’t mean that a damaged nail will be completely repaired in 6 months. That can take up to a year.

7.) The muscles that control your eyes contract about 100,000 times a day

That’s the equivalent of giving your legs a workout by walking 50 miles.

8.) Over the course of your lifetime, you’ll shed about 40lbs of skin.

Another gross one, but think about it. That’s a LOT of skin.

9.) Your brain uses about 20% of your oxygen and caloric intake.

This selfish organ is a mere 2% of a humans body mass, but uses 1/5th of the bodies most valuable fuels.

10.) In each kidney, there are 1 million filters that clean around 1.3 liters of blood every minute.

Take that, Britta.

11.) Ovaries contain over 500,000 eggs, but only about 400 get the opportunity to create life.

And of those 400, you were the big winner. Congrats. Don’t say you never won anything.

12.) Everyone has a completely unique smell.

Except for twins. It is believed that the human nose can detect roughly 3 trillion different smell combinations.

13.) Stomach acid is only contained because your stomach cells are created faster than they can be destroyed.

Stomach acid has the capability to dissolve razor blades, but somehow your stomach lining remains intact. Heartburn makes a little more sense now, right?

14.) You have about half-a-million sweat glands that produce about a pint of sweat daily.

Replace what you’ve lost. It’s in your best interest.

15.) Humans are extremely visual; 90% of the information we gather from our surroundings is from our eyesight.

We also see better when we are afraid.

16.) It’s nearly impossible to tickle yourself.

Go on… Try it. See. It’s not easy to do.

17.) Baby foreskin is often used as a skin graft for burn victims.

The human body then regenerates skin to compensate for that which was burned.

18.) Your bones, pound for pound, are 4x stronger than concrete.

Don’t try to test this one. We recommend you take our word for it.

19.) If an adult male’s skin were to be stretched out, it would cover 20 square feet.

Your skin is the largest organ in your body. Treat it right.

20.) In order to taste something, our saliva needs to dissolve it.

Try drying off your tongue and tasting something.

21.) Men produce about 10 million new sperm daily.

Thats approximately enough for one man to repopulate the entire planet in 6 months.

22.) In just 30 minutes, your body can produce enough heat to boil half a gallon of water.

This is while staying inactive. This time decreases with physical exertion.

23.) There are more than 300,000,000 capillaries in your lungs.

If they were stretched out tip to tip they would reach approximately the distance between Atlanta and LA.

24.) Frequent dreams are correlated with having a higher IQ.

Dreams are a sign of high brain activity, so make sure to brag to all your friends that you had another dream.

25.) You’ll be about 1cm shorter when you go to bed at night compared to when you wake up in the morning.

Your cartilage in your spine slowly compresses throughout the day and stretches back by night.

And our favorite:

26.) We are 70% water

That’s right! All of the previously named facts are made possible by water. Everywhere from brain function to cell growth/regrowth is stemmed from good old fashioned H2O, so don’t skip on the hydration.

Get water delivered directly to your door by starting a new service with us!

Each of our bodies are a miracle; it’s amazing they work the way they do, day in and day out.

Bottled water myths: Debunked.

aquaone logo copyLet’s face it: Bottled water is shrouded in myth and misconception. We’ve heard some tall tales when it comes to bottled water, and we’d like to debunk some of these fallacies with some factual inight:

MYTH: Bottled water costs 1,000 times more than tap water.

FACT:
According to the Beverage Marketing Corporation (BMC), the average price per gallon of domestic non-sparkling bottled water was $1.21 in 2010. As a popular retail food product, bottled water is available at many differing price points.

MYTH: FDA standards allow “contaminants” in bottled water not allowed in tap water.

FACT:
The FDA has established bottled water Standards of Quality for more than 90 substances. Most FDA bottled water quality standards are the same as the EPA’s maximum contaminant levels for tap water systems. The few differences are usually the result of the fact that the substance is not found in bottled water, or the substance is regulated under another provision of law such as the FDA’s food additives program.

MYTH: Bottled water companies are draining aquifers and trying to ‘privatize’ water supplies.

FACT:
According to a 2005 study by the Drinking Water Research Foundation (DWRF), annual bottled water production accounts for less than 2/100 of 1 percent (0.02%) of the total groundwater withdrawn in the United States each year. On average, 87 percent of the water withdrawn by bottled water companies is actually bottled for consumption by humans, so the bottling process is a very efficient one.

At 55 billion gallons per day, the largest user of groundwater is actually the agriculture industry. That amount equals 68 percent of total groundwater extracted in 2010. The second largest user of groundwater is public drinking supplies, which takes 16 billion gallons per day, or 19 percent of all U.S. groundwater extraction. Compared to those figures, bottled water barely registers on the radar.

Bottlers that access public water sources are subject to withdrawal taxes and local, state, and federal regulations just like any other business, including farms and other agricultural operations. Bottlers must also monitor aquifer levels and comply with state regulatory oversight. Bottlers that access municipal waters must also pay taxes and fees established by municipalities and states.

MYTH: Bottled water bottles are not safe and leach chemicals into the water.

FACT:
Bottled water containers, as with all food packaging materials, must be made from FDA-approved food contact substances.

So, the plastic and glass containers that are used for bottled water products (which are made from the same materials used in other food product containers) have undergone FDA scrutiny prior to being available for use in the market place. The FDA has determined that the containers used by the bottled water industry are safe for use with food and beverage products, including bottled water, and that they do not pose a health risk to consumers.

Sometimes, the claim is made that single use bottled water containers contain Bisphenol A. This is not true; PET plastic, from which these bottles are made, does not contain BPA.

MYTH: Most bottled water is just tap water in a bottle.

FACT:
It is important to note that purified bottled water is not just tap water in a bottle, even if it does come from a municipal source. Once the municipal source water enters the bottled water plant, several processes are employed to ensure that it meets the purified or sterile standard of the U.S. Pharmacopeia 23rd Revision. These treatments can include ozonation, reverse osmosis, distillation, or de-ionization. The finished water product is then placed in a bottle under sanitary conditions and sold to the consumer.

Some anti-bottled water activists imply that people may be unaware that they are consuming bottled water that is from a municipal water source and has been placed in a bottle without being purified. This is not the case. If a bottled water product’s source is a public water system and the finished bottled water product does not meet the FDA Standard of Identity for purified or sterile water, the product label must disclose the public water system source.

MYTH: The FDA has no authority over bottled water made and sold within a single state (i.e., not in interstate commerce).

FACT:
FDA’s jurisdiction over bottled water products (and any other product regulated by FDA) extends not only to those products that move in interstate commerce but also to those products sold within a single state that are enclosed in packaging materials that have moved in interstate commerce.

In the case of bottled water, if the plastic used in the bottles, the plastic used in the caps, the paper and ink used on the labels, any other outer packaging materials, or even the water itself comes from out of state, then FDA has jurisdiction over that product. And in today’s commercial society, that will almost always be the case. Congress has recognized this fact by enacting a law that expressly presumes that all food and beverage products are sold in interstate commerce.

MYTH: Bottled water isn’t as well regulated as tap water.

FACT:
By federal law, the Food and Drug Administration regulations governing the safety and quality of bottled water must be as stringent as the EPA regulations which govern tap water. To suggest in any way that bottled water is less stringently regulated than tap water is unfounded and untrue.

Our Water Process:

  1. We begin with the local municipal water supply. This water is passed through a 1 micron filter to remove any debris.
  2. The filtered water is then passed through dual activated-carbon tanks. This removes the chlorine from the water.
  3. A dual-system water softener is then used to remove a large amount of excess minerals and hardness (calcium, magnesium, iron).
  4. We purify the water by running it through dual reverse-osmosis membranes. This step removes 98% to 99% of the remaining mineral in the water, leaving exceptionally clean and purified water.
  5. Once these steps are completed, the purified water is sent to storage tanks to await the bottling process.

Our Bottling Process:

  1. The 3 & 5 Gallon bottles are run through an industrial bottle washer that cleans and sanitizes the bottles using special detergents, scrubbers and ozonated rinse water.
  2. The purified water from the storage tanks is passed through another 1 micron filter to add “polish”.  This ensures the water has a great taste.
  3. Polished water is pumped into an ozone holding tank. This step allows ozone to permeate the water and disinfect it. This assures that not only is the water exceptionally clean, but it is also completely safe from micro-organisms.
  4. The water is then injected with a small amount of our special mineral blend to give it a wonderful flavor.
  5. Our delicious water is pumped to the water filler heads of the bottling machine where it goes into the cleaned and sanitized bottles.
  6. The full bottles are capped inside the bottling machine and the finished bottles of water are sent down a conveyor to be date coded.
  7. The bottles are placed on water delivery racks to await loading on one of our delivery trucks.
  8. Our friendly and professional Route Sales Representatives deliver our great tasting water to your home or office!

Plastic water bottles account for 2% of the waste in landfills and are estimated to take up to 1,000 years to decompose.

But that’s not the only troubling fact. Check these out:

  • Americans use 2.5 million plastic bottles every hour and most of them are thrown away!
  • Recycling plastic saves twice as much energy as burning it in an incinerator.
  • Over 1,600 businesses are involved in recycling post-consumer plastics.
  • PET plastic can be recycled into: clothing, fiberfill for sleeping bags, toys, stuffed animals, rulers and more.
  • Only around 27% of plastic bottles are recycled.
  • Plastic bags and other plastic garbage thrown into the ocean kill as many as 1,000,000 sea creatures a year! Ever heard of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch? It’s twice the size of Texas and is floating somewhere between San Francisco and Hawaii. It’s also 80 percent plastic, and weighs in at 3.5 million tons.
  • When the small particles from photodegraded plastic bags get into the water, they are ingested by filter feeding marine animals. Biotoxins like PCBs that are in the particles are then passed up the food chain, including up to humans.
  • It has been estimated that recycling, re-use, and composting create six to ten times as many jobs as waste incineration and landfills.
  • Recycling saves 3 to 5 times the energy generated by waste-to-energy plants, even without counting the wasted energy in the burned materials.
  • 13.3% of plastic packaging was recycled in 2008.
  • The recycling rate of 32.5% in 2006 saved the carbon emission equivalent of taking 39.4 million cars off the road, and the energy equivalent of 6.8 million households’ annual energy consumption, or 222.1 million barrels of oil.
  • At least 90 percent of the price of a bottle of water is for things other than the water itself, like bottling, packaging, shipping and marketing.
  • Because plastic water bottles are shielded from sunlight in landfills, they will not decompose for around a thousands of years.
  • Recycling one ton of plastic saves the equivalent of 1,000–2,000 gallons of gasoline.
  • 66% of energy is saved when producing new plastic products from recycled materials instead of raw (virgin) materials.
  • For every 1 ton of plastic that is recycled we save the equivalent of 2 people’s energy use for 1 year, the amount of water used by 1 person in 2 month’s time and almost 2000 pounds of oil.
  • A survey was done and 9 out of 10 people surveyed said they would recycle more if it was easier. Odd as it seems there are many people who do not realize that plastic bottles our water comes in is made out of oil. This is the same oil that is used to make gasoline. It’s the same oil that is in such high demand and is not an unlimited resource.

Basically, It makes a lot of sense to let us help you go green.

AND IT SAVES YOU MONEY

One 5 gallon bottle = 38 1/2 liter bottles
38 bottles @ 35¢/bottle = $13.30
5 gallon bottle of AquaOne water = $5.99

YOU SAVE OVER $7 ON EVERY 5 GALLONS!

You can further reduce the environmental impact of plastic by using individual reusable bottles or by making sure that plastic used is recycled to be used again.

You really do NEED water.

Drink More Water

Water is a wonderful way to help you feel your best. Unfortunately, too many people overlook the power of this essential nutrient. Perhaps it’s your turn to give water a try?

Here are some hydration facts that will help keep you moving, courtesy of active.com.

1. You don’t have to drink plain water to hydrate.

While water is best, all fluids count, as do foods that have high water content.

For example:

  • Oatmeal is 84 percent water.
  • Low-fat milk is 90 percent water.
  • Coffee is 99.5 percent water.
  • Lettuce is 96 percent water.
  • Tomato is 95 percent water.
  • Broccoli is 89 percent water.
  • Low-fat vanilla yogurt is 79 percent water.
  • Ice cream is 60 percent water.

Your body cannot survive without sufficient water, as noted by the fact that athletes die from dehydration. Water is the solvent for your biochemical reactions.

3. You need water for digestion.

Water is required to moisten food (saliva), digest food(gastric secretions), transport nutrients to and from cells (blood), discard waste (urine), and dissipate heat (sweat). Water is a major component of the muscles and organs; about 60 percent of a male’s body weight and 50 percent of a woman’s body weight is water.

4. Your body parts have different water contents.

Water constantly moves through your cells. About 4 percent to 10 percent of your body-water gets replaced every day with “fresh” water. For example:

  • Blood is approximately 93 percent water.
  • Muscle is about 73 percent water.
  • Body fat is about 10 percent water.

5. Bioelectrical impedance (BIA) methods of measuring body fat actually measure body water.

This formula estimates the ratio of water to muscle and fat. Hence, if you use a Tanita Scale or Omron device, be sure to maintain adequate hydration. If you are dehydrated, you’ll end up with an inaccurate (higher) estimate of body fat.

6. Your body produces 8 to 16 oz. (250 to 500 ml) water per day.

This occurs during normal metabolic processes. During a marathon, a runner’s muscles can produce that much water over two to three hours. When muscles burn glycogen, they simultaneously release about 2.5 units water for every 1 unit of muscle glycogen; this helps protect against dehydration.

7. Your coffee is a source of water.

Although once thought to have a diuretic effect, current research indicates coffee (in amounts normally consumed) hydrates as well as water over a 24-hour period. That is, after drinking coffee, you may urinate sooner, but you will not urinate more than you consume.

Army research on caffeine and dehydration confirms coffee is an acceptable source of fluids for athletes, even during exercise in the heat. Hence, coffee and other caffeinated beverages such as tea or cola count towards your water intake.

8. An increased concentration of particles in your blood triggers the sensation of thirst.

If you are a 150-pound athlete, you’ll start to feel thirsty once you’ve lost about 1.5 to 3 pounds of sweat (1 percent to 2 percent of your body weight). You are seriously dehydrated when you have lost 5 percent of your body weight.

9. Body water absorbs heat from your muscles and sweat dissipates heat.

The evaporation of 1 liter (about 36 oz.) of sweat from the skin represents a loss of about 580 calories. Sweat keeps you from overheating during exercise and in hot environments.

10. You can measure your water losses after a workout.

To determine how much water you lose when you sweat, weigh yourself (with little or no clothing) before and after one hour of hard exercise with no fluid intake. The change in body weight reflects sweat loss. A one-pound drop in weight equates to loss of 16 oz. of sweat. A two-pound drop equates to 32 oz.—that’s 1 quart. Drink accordingly during your workouts to prevent that loss.

11. When you sweat, you lose water from both inside and outside your cells.

The water outside the cells is rich in sodium, an electrolyte that works in balance with potassium. Potassium is an electrolyte inside the cells. Sweat contains about seven times more sodium than potassium, hence sodium is the most important electrolyte to replace during extended exercise.

12. Dehydration can hinder athletic performance.

Athletes who lose more than 2 percent of their body weight (3 pounds for a 150-pound athlete) lose both their mental edge and their ability to perform optimally in hot weather. Yet, during cold weather, you are less likely to experience reduced performance, even at 3 percent dehydration.

Three to 5 percent dehydration does not seem to affect muscle strength or performance during short intense bouts of anaerobic exercise, such as weight lifting. But distance runners slow their pace by 2 percent for each percent of body weight lost through dehydration. Sweat loss of more than 10 percent body weight is life threatening.

13. Water can reduce constipation and help with urinary tract infections.

There is also no scientific validation of theories that excessive water intake will improve weight loss, remove toxins, or improve skin tone.

14. You don’t need eight glasses of water per day.

No scientific evidence supports the “eight glasses per day” rule, so you can simply drink in response to thirst. You can also monitor the volume of your urine. If your urine is scanty, dark, and smelly, you should drink more. If you have not urinated during your work or school day (8 a.m. to 3 p.m.), you are severely under-hydrated.

Making Coca-Cola Is Way More Complex Than You Could Possibly Imagine

In this amazing post from Kevin Ashton, the journey of Coca-Cola is told, a process so elaborate, no single human being – check that, no single nation – today could make a can.

Yeah, it’s that complex.

What Coke Contains

The Vons grocery store two miles from my home in Los Angeles, California sells 12 cans of Coca-Cola for $6.59 — 54 cents each. The tool chain that created this simple product is incomprehensibly complex.

Each can originated in a small town of 4,000 people on the Murray River in Western Australia called Pinjarra. Pinjarra is the site of the world’s largest bauxite mine. Bauxite is surface mined — basically scraped and dug from the top of the ground. The bauxite is crushed and washed with hot sodium hydroxide, which separates it into aluminum hydroxide and waste material called red mud. The aluminum hydroxide is cooled, then heated to over a thousand degrees celsius in a kiln, where it becomes aluminum oxide, or alumina. The alumina is dissolved in a molten substance called cryolite, a rare mineral first discovered in Greenland, and turned into pure aluminum using electricity in a process called electrolysis. The pure aluminum sinks to the bottom of the molten cryolite, is drained off and placed in a mold. It cools into the shape of a long cylindrical bar. The bar is transported west again, to the Port of Bunbury, and loaded onto a container ship bound for — in the case of Coke for sale in Los Angeles — Long Beach.
