Iceland’s Blue Lagoon

It’s not a natural pool of tropical blue-green water like others of the same name. This lagoon is man-made of mineral-rich seawater from a nearby geothermal plant. Despite such less than romantic origins, though, the final result is otherworldly: a milky blue water hole with steam rising from it and white mud within it— perfect for bathers to slather on themselves.

A lesson from Germany

Enter Germany.

Among all nations of the Earth, few standout as Germany when it comes to national recycling efforts.

They are a leader in the global effort of recycling waste. We’d like to take you on a tour of the special system they have in place that has proven effective.

A major part of the success of this program is this proper sorting of garbage. It’s a system of categories. Every piece of trash goes into one of five bins.

German Recycling: What Belongs Where?

Brown bin (biological waste)

  • Kitchen waste: old bread, eggs shells, coffee powder and filters, food leftovers, tealeaves and tea filters
  • Fruit and vegetables: peels, apple cores, leaves, nutshells, fruit stones and pips, lettuce leaves
  • Garden waste: soil, hedge trimmings, leaves, grass clippings, weeds, dead flowers, and twigs
  • Other: feathers, hair, kitchen towels, tissues, sawdust, and straw

Blue bin (paper)

  • Envelopes, books, catalogues, illustrations, cartons, writing pads, brochures, writing paper, school books, washing detergent cartons without plastic, newspapers, paper boxes

Yellow bin or bags (plastic, etc)

  • Aluminum foil, plastic wrap, inside packaging materials
  • Tins, cans, liquids refill sachets/bags, yogurt cups, body lotion bottles
  • Plastic bags, margarine tubs, milk sachets, plastic packaging trays for fruit and vegetables, screw-top bottle tops, detergent bottles, carry bags, vacuum packaging, dishwashing liquid bottles

Gray bin (household waste)

  • Ash, wire, carbon paper, electrical appliances, bicycle tubes, photos, broken glass, bulbs, chewing gum, personal hygiene articles, nails, porcelain, rubber, plastic ties, broken mirrors, vacuum cleaner bags, street sweeping dirt, carpeting pieces, diapers, cigarette butts, miscellaneous waste

Every household disposes waste into the appropriate bin.

What happens to all of it?  They burn it.  AVG, a waste management and incineration company estimates garbage incineration yields over 400,000 megawatts of power and 230,000 tons of steam per year.

Our bottles are made with recycled plastic.

Our water isn’t just pure. There’s a lot more to the story than just the double reverse osmosis and activated carbon purification process. Our bottles are renewed, reused and recycled from plastic waste. That means less plastic in landfills, rivers, lakes and oceans.

It’s just one more thing AquaOne does to WOW you with our service.

7 Simple Ways To Cut Back Water Use

We all use water everyday. But, there are a few ways you can cut back on waste. You might be surprised how much you can conserve. Check it out:

  1. Shut Off The Faucet While Brushing Your Teeth – We’re not saying you should use the water in the toilet to clean your teeth, we’re just saying you can fight dental plaque with double honor when you’re conserving water simultaneously.
  2. Fill Your Sink While Shaving – That 5 o’clock shadow won’t know what happened once you’ve used this technique. Just fill up your sink with water enough to use while shaving. Don’t let the faucet run. Not only are you loving the Earth, you’re one step closer to the GQ look you’ve been working so hard to achieve. Ok… You’ll need more than water conservation to help you with that, cowboy.
  3. Fill Your Toilet Reservoir – By putting a milk carton full of rocks in the toilet basin, you fill useless space and displace water more effectively. Just don’t use the jug for milk afterward.
  4. Fix Leaks – C’mon! Get off the couch, turn off the football game, clean the cob-webs off your wrench and fix the leak in the bathroom! Not only have you won valuable “manly” points, but you’ve just reduced your energy bill! Saving money while saving the Earth? Nice work.
  5. No Toilet Trash - The trash can is two feet away from the toilet! Try refraining from throwing and flushing things away when you can save all that water by tossing it a tiny bit further into the bin.
  6.  Reduce Shower Time - I know you do your best thinking – and singing – in the shower. Yet, loving the Earth often necessitates sacrifice. Cutting back shower time by 2 minutes will save hundreds of gallons of water when consistently done.
  7. Using The Cold Stuff – You know the 5-25 seconds you have to wait for your sink or shower water to heat up? Why not collect it and use it for your garden? Or pour the water on your roommate while they’re sunbathing on the lawn.

Palo Duro Canyon: Warrior 100k with George W. Bush

Roberto Rodriguez / Amarillo Globe-News The Bush Center Warrior 100K Race, Thursday, April 26, 2012 at Palo Duro Canyon State Park.

A ride in the canyon to support those who put their lives on the line in Iraq and Afghanistan – that was the theme from Palo Duro Canyon this weekend as former U.S President George W. Bush led a select group of “warriors” through a grueling, Summer-like stretch of the canyon.

AquaOne proudly provided the water needed to keep riders hydrated.

Cyclists said it was an honor to participate with the wounded and Mr. Bush.

“This is one of the great moments in Palo Duro Canyon, the group of people here are of such a caliber, and they will go home and talk to their friends, and it’s great advertising for the canyon but it’s also a great showpiece because everyone that came down here was just totally blown away,” says Mark Bivins, participant.

The military service initiative is part of the Bush Institute’s efforts to improve the lives of Americans through education, health, and publicity efforts.

Amarillo National Bank helped bring the former President here to make this all possible.
